Sea Surface Temperature & Phytoplankton Concentration

Satellite images showing Sea Surface Temperature (AVHRR) and phytoplankton concentration (MODIS) in the southeastern Caribbean Sea for the month of February 2012 (upwelling period). The phytoplankton distribution near Margarita Island matches the spatial pattern of the cold Cariaco upwelling plume. The high pigment concentrations seen along the coast of Eastern South America and into the Caribbean correspond to the Orinoco River plume.
